Etymotic Research, Inc. (ER) is a research, development and manufacturing company located in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. The name "Etymotic" (pronounced "et-im-OH-tik.") means "true to the ear." Established in 1983, ER's mission is to design high-fidelity products to measure, improve and protect hearing. ER has developed and patented some of the most innovative hearing technology available today. ER's products are used worldwide by scientists, hearing practitioners, hearing-impaired consumers, professional and amateur musicians, and others who insist on superior sound quality.
Innovation and education are key elements of ER's mission. ER holds 89 patents and has another 61 patents pending, covering instrumentation for audiometry, infant hearing screening, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and real-ear measurement, as well as circuitry, directional microphones, and other components for hearing aids and automotive applications. ER's engineers and audiologists provide advanced coursework and laboratory research to graduate students in audiology from four universities. They also lecture at local, national and international meetings, publish research, and develop educational materials for consumers. In addition to its extensive laboratory facilities, ER also maintains a classroom facility adjacent to its R&D lab.
In 1987, Etymotic Research was issued a government grant for development of the K-AMP circuit, a high-fidelity hearing aid amplifier that has been used in over 3 million hearing aids worldwide. Etymotic is repaying that grant by providing financial assistance to graduate students, researchers and practicing clinicians who are engaged in research that supports ER's mission.
